Welcome to the ‘Late Spring’ update for Woodsetts Quarry Pond. Well looks like the increase in temperature has seen off the last of the winter weather and spring is well and truly here. All around the lake the foliage is taking on its spring colour and the numerous lily pads in the lake are starting to flourish once more.
In recent weeks one or two bigger carp have been caught from different areas of the lake, showing that they are well spread out and enjoying the upsurge in weed growth as they raid nature’s larder and feed up towards spawning in June. Back in December 2018 we introduced some 80 smaller carp and 12 bigger carp to Woodsetts. The bigger fish were all between 23lb and 28lb. This will boost the stock even further and increase the competition for food.
To date four of the bigger fish have been caught, up to 26lb 8oz, showing that they have settled in well and are actively searching out bait. Feeding pellets each week through the winter seems to have kept them on the move and captures this year, in terms of numbers, would indicate one of the best starts to spring in comparison to previous years!
There are now some 300 carp in Woodsetts, all were hand-picked for their looks, strain and were stocked at various stages over the last five years to ensure a balanced but steady growth rate. We have a large number of carp now that are ‘on or over the twenty pound mark’, with several upper twenties also present and potentially three carp on or over 30lb! If you are visiting us on a day ticket (bookable in advance by ringing 07769 212762), remember to bring plenty of bait with you… these fish are growing fast.
We often get questions regarding fishing at Woodsetts and whether you are able to fish at night? The water is run as a syndicate water and currently has 45 full memberships available each season…this is for day and night fishing. Places are available based on members from the previous year leaving and there is a waiting list in operation (see elsewhere on this website). Night fishing is reserved for full syndicate members, but they are able to bring guests who must be booked in prior to fishing. Day tickets are available to non-members, but they must book in the day before they wish to fish. We do offer regular day ticket angers the opportunity to have access to night fishing if the lake is not busy… so please do ask when booking in.
This year again we will be offering 12 Winter Syndicate permits. These start on October 1st and run through to end of March the following year. Taking a Winter Ticket automatically puts you at the front of the list (with other winter ticket members) for the full syndicate the following year. If you intend coming to Woodsetts to carp fish please ensure you have booked in prior to travelling, you have a large, well-padded unhooking mat and a 42in landing net with fine mesh. All rigs must be safe and the lead must be able to drop off in the event of a snag. Please also be aware that we have a strict 15lb mainline or above rule in place, and no braid to be used as mainline.
For the non-carp angler, Woodsetts has a wealth of coarse species and Tench, Bream, Roach and Rudd, can all be caught on either float or feeder methods. As with all day-ticket fishing, you must book in the day before you wish to fish.
